Create your own custom theme for Chrome

T

he la test version of Chrome has some new

customisationtools that letyou alter the look ofyour

New Tab Page and change thecolours of the barsat

the top from Chrome’s usual drab grey. These powerful

customisation options aren’tavailable

in theregular settingsyet, so you need

to dig deep intoyour br owser’s

‘chrome://flags’ pageto activate them.

Typechrome://flagsin the address bar^1 and press

Enterto open theconfiguration screen.TypeNTPin the

search box^2 and use the drop-down menusto enable

‘ChromeColors menu’ and ‘NTP customization menuversion

2’.^3 Save anything important and clickRelaunch Now.^4

Chrome shouldrelaunch with the same windows and

tabs open butyou may be signed out of services.

Shouldyou needto revert them, the changesyou made

from the default setting should now beat the top of the main

Flags page.^1

Open a new tab and click Customise.^1 You can, as

before, uploadyour own background image^2 or keep

it blank.^3 To select from Google’s images, clicka

subject^4 and choose an image from what’s available. Click

the ‘Refresh daily’switch to see a new imageevery day.

Click Shortcuts^1 to choose whether shortcuts are

displayed under the Google search box.To get rid of

them, click the ‘Hide shortcuts’switch;^2 to display

them, chooseyour own by clicking ‘My shortcuts’^3 or let

Googlecontinueto add the sitesyou visit most often.^4

Select ‘Colour and theme’^1 to choose pairedcolours

for abo ve the browser window: the leftcolour^2 for

toolbars and tabs;^3 the rightfor the background. Click

the oneyou want to use. Now, go backtochrome://flags

and the NTP (NewTab Page) search – as outlined inStep 1.

The optionswe didn’t enable inStep 1 set whethera

screenfades or just appears,^1 and improve animation

whenrearranging icons,^2 but this onlyworks if the

new tools areswitched off. However, changesto the colour

scheme appearto stay,^3 even if you disable the menu.^4
