Backing up Gmailworks like
a dream
Issue 484 ofWeb Userfeatured a
workshop about backing up Gmailto
your PC using UpSafe Free Gmail Backup
(bit.ly/gmbu484). I’m a taxi driver and
my weekly invoice (PDF) and customer
statisticscome via Gmail. I’ve been
lookingfor a way to downloadmy emails
from Gmail
and I have to
say that this
program is
the business.
The backup
options,
along with
the email filtering, work like a dream
when sortingmy accounts.
In Step 5 ofyour workshop,you sa y
that “any attached files can be
downloaded from theAttachments tab”.
The thing is, theattachments are
automatically downloaded anyway,
which isawesome, so there’s no needto
download them separately. That’s a minor
point, but UpSafe Free Gmail Backup is
definitely anexcellent, free program.
This issuewas the best £2.30 I’ve
spent thisyear, although I buyyour
magazineregularly and love it.

Stop scaremongering about
smart meters
In responseto your question about smart
meters (Inbox, Issue 485) –yes, we have
one, but I’ve sinceswitched supplier so
the readings are notyet automatically
sent to mynew supplier. They say this
will changevery soon, though, so the
fact that I already have the system in
place andready to use is a bonus.
Meanwhile, the indoor meterstill works
so I can takemy meterreadings from it,

which saves me ferreting around in the
outside cupboard.
Sadly, there’s been some
scaremongering, which has put some
people off smart meters. They are no
different from any other electronic or
mechanical meter,except with the bonus
that readings can bereceived by the
company automatically andyou can see
all readings in thewarmth ofyour home
without havingto dive in cupboards with
a torch. They cost the same andyes, you

I

n his Page 404column in Issue 485,
BarryCollins raves about the latest
version of Firefox and says that it
“may be aboutto land a sucker punch
on Chrome”. Sorry, but what planet is
Barry living on? Firefox hasn’t got
a hope of winning back users from
Chrome, whether it deservesto or not.
Google has suchcontrol over the
web that its Chrome browser is the
automatic choicefor most people,
and they’ll probably never feel the
needto try anything else. Chrome is
preinstalled on all Android devices,
for a start, and it has all the best
extensions including Grammarly,
Evernote and Ghostery. I know
those same add-ons areavailablefor
Firef ox, too, but whenyou searchfor
them, the Chromeversions always

Firefox is still no match for Chrome

appear first in theresults.
Firef ox had its chance but itfailed to
keep up with Chrome and now it’s fallen
so far behind that it will bevery hardfor
it to regain popularity.Adding afew
privacytools isn’t likelyto help, despite

what Barry thinks, becauseyou can
already get thosefeatures from
add-ons.
In any case, I don’t use Chrome or
Firef ox any more. I switchedto Vivaldi
last year and haven’t looked back. It’s
got much more interestingfeatures
than either of those browsers andyou
can installextensions from the Chrome
Web Store andsync allyour
bookmarks and passwords between
PCs. Asyou covered in your workshop
in Issue 485, there’s also aVivaldi app
for Android now, so I caneven avoid
using Chrome onmy phone.
I’m not bashing people who like
Firef ox – if itworks for them, then fine

  • butto suggest that it’s making some
    sort of majorcomeback is laughable.
