Air-Britain News – August 2019

(nextflipdebug5) #1
A job lot of a Cessna 172H including two RR O-300-D engines
(albeit one shock-loaded and the other with Hrs expired) plus two
wings, fuselage, tailplane, doors, rear seats etc is offered for parts
recovery. The flying surfaces are not serviceable, but are a good source
of parts (flap motors, hinges etc). Reported as damaged in a landing
accident in 2015 and has since been dry-stored. Difficult to trace to a
specific airframe, but F172H G-AWGD is a possible candidate: it struck
a ridge in the runway on take off at Keyston, Cambs 15th April 2015
and directional control was lost. The aircraft’s left wing struck a tall
hedge, causing the aircraft to turn and collide with the hedge. Major
damage to nose landing gear, engine cowlings and wings. Although
not strictly a landing accident, it did eventually come to earth!
Paul Carlton offers Cessna F150M G-BEOK on behalf of fellow
Morgansfield, Fishburn owner Mike O’Connor, who has less time
available to fly it.
Although sold to the LAA’s Steve Slater in 2014, Piper J3C-65
G-ASPS will forever be associated with Alan Chalkley, who cherished it
for some 50 years. It is now for sale via AT Aviation Sales for those who
want a Classic, albeit with US Army insignia on an overall yellow
scheme.
On AFORS a 2000-built Jabiru UL-450 is for sale having been in
storage for a while with the wings removed. The engine has been run
regularly, the aircraft has done 402hrs. Since being in storage someone
has pushed something against the wing and has caused some damage
this maybe repairable or a replacement wing. Our best guess is G-JABB:
393 Hrs recorded at last Permit renewal 17th May 2017 and last
recorded at Ludham
Pegasus XL-R G-MTLV is reported as an “Unloved hangar queen” at
Beccles and has not flown for several years (Permit expired 11th May
2015), but the sailwing passed a Betts test in February. Could be
suitable for Permit renewal, SSDR conversion or simply for spares use.
Pegasus Quantum 15-912 G-CDVH underwent the Quantum Leap
upgrade by P&M before their recent demise and is for sale via Durham
Microlights at Greenhills Farm, Wheatley Hill. The more obvious
features of the upgrade are a more aerodynamic A-frame & kingpost
and the higher pod screen, all contributing to increased trim range and
pilot/passenger protection, plus more subtle changes to the flying
cable attachment points.
Formally re-registered on 11th June to show the change from
original HKS engine to Rotax 582, Cyclone AX2000 G-JONY is offered
for sale by the Banff owner. He quotes the background: It started life
as an AX2000 HKS. It was damaged back in 2007 and a complete
rebuild along with a replacement engine was installed. He bought the
aircraft approximately two years ago (re-registered 7th July 2017) with
the intention of using it for training, however, this never really
transpired. It suffered a catastrophic engine failure in 2018 with the
result that the terrible underpowered engine was irreparable. He
completely stripped and rebuilt the aircraft and installed a 240 hour
Rotax 582 along with a Brolga 68 3-blade propeller. The engine was
overhauled by Ecclestone Aviation in 2015 and replacement pistons
were fitted. Since then the engine has done under 20 hours. Before
fitting the engine he had it re checked by Ecclestone Aviation for peace
of mind. The performance figures now are night and day from the old
HKS engine. With the previous owner some years ago, readers may
recall that it flew in pseudo-USAF scheme from Headon Farm
Acquired in 2006 and hangared at Kernan Valley, Letov LK-2M Sluka
G-MZBF has been the much loved SSDR of the present owner Victor
Simpson, who has decided to offer it for sale due to failing health.
There are many extra related items available, plus parts available (no
engine) from G-MYRR (cancelled as PWFU 27th July 2009), which he
also acquired in 2009 as a spares source. As an indication of the care
that he has given “Molly” as G-MZBF is called he says: In 2009 the sail
cloth was renewed, both wings and tail planes (Top Flight Sails in
Gwent); May 2010 strengthening tube fitted inside boom; April 2011
renewed propeller – Woodcomp 3 blade (Special Aviation Services);
June 2014 deregulated to SSDR; September 2015 Engine de-coked and
renewed all flight instruments (Parts-4-Aircraft). Renewed Air filter
(Skydrive); December 2015 Fitted M4 starter with new clutch bearing
and Lithium-ion battery (Varley LI-3); December 2016 new instrument
panel fitted & Polycarb windshield renewed; March 2017 Fitted new
electric fuel pump and renewed EHT & CHT senders (Skydrive);
Summer 2018 renewed seat padding (Larne Upholstery) & white
powder-coated Jury struts.

POTENTIAL SALES

Naval Aircraft Factory N3N-3 G-CFXT (no Permit to Fly issued to date)
is for sale by AT Aviation Sales on the PlaneCheck webpages.
Restoration is not yet completed, but Andy Twemlow quaintly refers to
one of their long-standing partners Vintage Skunkworks of Wickenby

  • a description often used in the enthusiast world, but never seen
before in a business sense! The aircraft is available on terms and
conditions that include a part Vendor-funded scheme while the
aircraft is being completed. According to the advert, G-CFXT is on an
IRAN rebuild, but retains the vintage patina and has had fresh fabric
applied and currently in a base coat stage ready for painting in a final
scheme in which the buyer can be involved. It has a zero-timed
Hamilton Standard propeller on the P&W R985 Wasp Junior. The
accompanying photos (again must be a first for those taken inside the
Wickenby hangar and contrary to the Coopers’ normal strictures of
photographs not appearing in public gaze) also reveal more on the
inmates. Those identifiable include Nord NC856 G-CDWE (hangared at
Dunkeswell by 5th July 2019), Seabee G-CJSB, Fairchild M62A Cornell
G-CRNL, a silver metal finish dismantled Chipmunk (probably G-BCZH),
G-CILD (the Pruett ¾ scale Curtiss Pusher replica built in 1960) and
Sorrell SNS-8 Hiperlight G-CJUY – the tail is so marked, thus correcting
    Hypelight in BIR2019!
Alan Bales reports that he has decided to give up flying due to
losing the use of his private strip due to insurance issues and his Titan
Mustang G-MUZY (marked as 472218/WZ-I) is for sale. Although we
have recently shown the base as nearby Tibenham, he has obviously
been using his 730ft long strip at Uplands Farm, Upper Stoke, Stoke
Holy Cross for the past three years and some 200 Hrs with the Mustang
inevitably in the “Big Beautiful Doll” scheme so favoured by real and
    representational P-51 flyers.
On the UKGA sales pages there is a Cherokee being offered by a
Stephen Taylor with a location given as Worcester. Reported to be an
engineless “barn find” with some storage damage, but including spare
panels and originally imported from Switzerland. The accompanying
photo shows it to be red and white and appears to be the early
standard Piper style. Impossible to check the many de-registered
PA-28 examples, but a search of the currently registered examples that
have an immediate last HB- p.i. produces two. One is Piper PA-28-181
G-CKXU that has not received a CofA since registration to the Stoke-
on-Trent owner and we have no idea where it is. The other is Humphrey
Penney’s Piper PA-28-140B G-BULR, whose fuselage was dumped
outside his hangar at Sandtoft in April 2017 and could have moved on,
although this seems to have always had a blue colour scheme. Given
the Worcester location it could possibly be one from Pure Aviation at
Croft Farm, Defford where they acquire oddments for spares?
