BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA

Air Force and Anti-Air Defence Brigade

Bosnia and Herzegovina, as it is these days, comprises two autonomous
entities – the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republika
Srpska, with a third unit, the Brčko District, governed under local
government. It is beyond this article to go into any depth about the
country’s formation, but suffice to say it went through a traumatic
gestation as a result of the Bosnian War which took place between
1992 and 1995, where an estimated 100,000 people lost their lives.
The Air Force and Anti‑Air Defence Brigade is a part of the Armed
Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with headquarters in Sarajevo.
The Air Force and Anti‑Aircraft Defence Brigade of Bosnia and
Herzegovina was formed from the Army of the Federation of Bosnia
and Herzegovina and the Republika Srpska Air Force when they were
both merged on 1st January 2006.
The air force is currently a pure helicopter force equipping three
squadrons. The fixed wing elements of the Republika Srpska Air Force
have long since been withdrawn from use and remain stored at Banja
Luka/Mahovljani.

Order of Battle
1 Helicopter Squadron Base – Sarajevo/Rajlovac
Operates UH‑1 and Mil Mi‑17
2 Helicopter Squadron Base – Banja Luka
Operates Mil Mi‑8 and SA.342 Gazelle
3 Helicopter Squadron Base – Tuzla

Aircraft Types

I have attempted to give all serial information that is known and
published including stored types– and due thanks are given to
AirHistory.net, Rotorspot, Eurodemobbed, Scramble and Planebase.
With regards to serials:

  • The Republika of Srpska used the Jugoslav National Army Air
Force as essentially the aircraft were just taken over from the JNA.

  • The Army of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina primarily
had serials prefixed VF‑, prior to this the types were registered
    with T9‑ registration

  • Current operational are now serialed with the prefix A‑
Most observations of operational and stored aircraft seem to have
occurred in early 2012, with very few after this time.
