or ten days each July, nearly 1.2 million people descend upon the city of Calgary, Alberta,
in western Canada. What could bring so many people together at once? Billed as “The
Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth,” the Calgary Stampede attracts this massive crowd year
after year to celebrate the spirit of the Old West with one of the world’s largest rodeos,
agricultural and livestock competitions, nightly concerts and fireworks shows, and so much
more. You might even look across the crowd and see members of the British Royal Family
wearing cowboy hats.
More than a hundred years ago, the idea for a world-class rodeo competition and
exhibition celebrating the cowboy and frontier lifestyle was born in the mind of cowboy
showman Guy Weadick. He had been traveling from town to town across the United States
