With 250,000 subscribers to her
Facebook page, Leslie Belliot is
bringing Guadeloupe’s cuisine to
a whole new audience.
Born in Paris and raised in
Guadeloupe, Leslie focuses on
traditional French cuisine with
a Caribbean twist. “Cinnamon,
nutmeg, vanilla, cloves – the
spices of the island’s cuisine are a
passion for me,” says Leslie. “They
are very easy to incorporate
into traditional dishes. For
example, a touch of lime and

vanilla goes beautifully with
scalloped walnuts, and cinnamon
transforms a rice pudding.”
Leslie was taught to cook
by her mother. For a while she
practised as a massage therapist
but after the arrival of her third
child decided to devote herself
fully to cooking. However,
rather than work long hours in
restaurants, she chose a different
route. In less than three years her
blog reached 250,000 subscribers
on Facebook, and some of her

(French-language) videos have
been viewed more than one
million times. “My secret is to
make short videos that cover
the basics,” says Leslie. “No
complications. If it’s fast and easy
then my subscribers can quickly
understand and try it out.”
