WINNER
GAANESH PRASAD
A project manager by profession and an ardent photographer who loves travel,
street, and sports photography, Gaanesh Prasad relishes visiting various places
to satisfy his passion for capturing people in different phases, beautiful places,
and various cultures. Sports photography allows Prasad to capture unique and
creative shots, while extreme sports test his speed and quick reflexes to
situations in capturing decisive moments. Street photography allows him to rely
on creative thinking while always looking for something new and different. A
firm believer of continuous learning, every time Prasad steps out, he learns
something new, then tests out what he’s learnt. For him, photography reflects a
love of life, and he enjoys every moment that he spends with his camera.

“I always wanted to click [an image] connecting spectators to the airshow above.
I happened to see a veteran holding his hand and covering his eyes, blocking the
sunlight, as he was watching the warbirds coming down. It was a perfect opportunity
for me to go behind him and wait until the warbirds came close to the veteran in frame.
After two hours of waiting and going around trying to get a frame, it was worth it.”

WHAT THE

JUDGES

THOUGHT

This is a top shot. It’s a
photograph that captures the
imagination and expresses
the personality of the
photographer as well as the
person in front of the camera
(without even seeing their
face). Humorous,
compositionally strong,
simple, and direct. We can
see the story and can rejoice
in the superb use of black and
white shapes, tones, and
spaces found within the
frame. Congratulations.

  • Jackie Rankin

You don’t need to see his
face to tell this story. This
portrait is taken from a
voyeuristic perspective, and
tells so much without seeing
a lot. The silhouette of the
man, composed and timed
perfectly with the form of the
planes and vapour – the
centred composition in the
vast country space feels quite
conceptual. He is immersed
in the moment while
simultaneously capturing it. It
makes for a great tonal
black-and-white image.

  • Juliet Taylor

This image creates both ease
and dis-ease for the viewer. A
veteran looking on at an
airshow in pristine surrounds
on a beautiful day, also
echoes humankind’s
tumultuous past and our view
towards an uncertain political
and environmental future.
Uprising contrails that end in
the uniformed descent of the
warbirds. It’s a simply and
beautifully composed image
that shows skilled use of
composition and framing.
