Travel speed
Many beginner welders tend to move
too quickly with the MIG process. Slow
right down, concentrate on your wire
stick-out and try to maintain a constant
uniform speed. You may even cause

the optimum speed.
Before you release the trigger, try to
pause for a second at the end of the weld
to ensure that you terminate the weld
properly. Stopping too soon will leave an
incomplete weld and, worse, can allow
some oxidization to affect the weld at
the end.
As the wire burns away, some learners
tend to push it into the joint. Generally
this will result in burnt-out tips and
nozzles. Not to mention damaged pride.
Learn to let the machine do the work and
focus on your speed. Practice is the key

If you have the correct amp settings
teamed with good angles and an average
travel speed, chances are you will make
a strong, solid weld.

originally used as a replacement for

cored arc welding (gasless) wire is the
sheddie’s multi-tasker for mild steel. In
an instant, it produces its own shielding
to help protect the arc. Gasless wire is
renowned for being able to weld over
galvanized, painted, and rusty surfaces,
primarily because of various ingredients

contaminants on steel, such as the just-
mentioned paint, rust, and galvanizing
— all the things we were taught to grind

off before we start welding. But normal
good practice in any welding prep calls
for removing as much of the coating,
dirt, or rust as possible.
Gasless wire can deposit weld metal
that meets structural requirements and
forms a fast-freezing slag over the weld
metal to protect it from the atmosphere.
Welding with gasless wire is very similar
to stick welding. I have found that
novices who can stick weld often pick

Outdoors, gasless wire comes into its
own, as a shielding gas would be blown
away. Good gasless wires can be used in
wind speeds of up to 50kph without f
