you.”Kaylaturnedaroundandretorted,
“So?”Withoutresponding,Dedrickliftedout
a .32handgunfromhistrouserswaistband
andshotKayla.Thebulletenteredherright
armandtravelledthrougha vitalartery.Asa
small,crimsonspotspreadacrossherpullover
shirt,Kaylasaid,“I’mgoingtodie,”toanother
classmatebeforecrumplingtotheground.
Juddranbackintotheclassroom,sawthe
blood-spatteredbodyandcalled911.
Dedrick,meanwhile,placedthegunonhis
deskandranoutintothehall,wherehewas
detainedbyotherteachersandtakento
theprincipal’soffice.Afterbeingtreatedby
paramedicsatthescene,Kaylawasrushedto
hospital,whereshewaspronounceddead.
Dedrickhadbecometheyoungestschool
shooterina countryoverwhelmedbysuch
tragedies.Hewastakenintopolicecustody
whereheexplainedwhathehaddone.It
wasnotedheshowednoremorse;nordid
heseemupset.Hesimplybelievedhe’d
been‘naughty’andthata ‘badthinghad
happened’.Thenhesatdrawingpicturesona

Atthetimeoftheshooting,Dedrick’sfather,
Dedric,wasinjailforviolatingparole.He’d
beenconvictedofcocainepossessionwith
theintenttosell.PolicelearntDedrickand
hisolderbrotherhadbeenlivingina crack
denoperatedbyhisuncle,oneSirMarcus
Winfrey,andJamelleJames.Dedrick’sdrug-
addictmother,Tamarla,hadmovedthetwo
boys in with her brother and his friend after

stolenbyJamelle,who
routinelykeptit loaded
andoftentwirledit in
frontofthetwoboys.

policethey’dseen

gun.Alarmingly,it was
foundthatnumerous
phonecallshadbeenplacedtothepolice
bytheneighbours,whoknewthatthe
livingconditionswereunacceptablefortwo
children.
PolicealsolearntDedrickhadbehavioural
issues.Hewasknowntokickandhithisother
classmatesandpickfights.Worse,he’donce
beensuspendedforstabbinga fellowstudent
witha pencil.AndhehadattackedKayla
before. Just the day before the shooting, he’d
attemptedtokissherandshepushedhim
away.Hetoldpolicehe’dtakenthegunto
schoolinanattempttoscareheraftertheir
playgroundaltercation.
Becauseofhisage,it wasdeemedthat
Dedricklackedtheabilitytoformintent
andhewasnotcharged
withmurder.Instead,
hewasexpelledfor 90
daysinaccordancewith
Michigan’sschoolanti-
weaponslawandplaced
intofostercare.
Fornotkeepingthegun
ina securelocationand
thereforegrantingDedrickaccesstothe
weapon,JamelleJameswaschargedwith
involuntarymanslaughter.Hepleadedno
contestandwassentencedtotwoto 15 years’
imprisonment.SirMarcusWinfreypleaded
guiltytofederalfirearmschargesandwas
sentencedtosixto 12 months’imprisonment.
TamarlaOwens,whoclaimedshehadnoidea
thatstolengunswerebeingsoldinside the
house, was charged with neglect.
HEHE was known
too kkick and hit his
other classmatesate
and pick fi ghts.
HE didn’t like her, so he
took out a gun and shot
her. She was just six years
old. So was her killer.
