Baltimore Bride – July 2019

BALTIMORE | 118 | WEDDINGS

Workneh says she planned the entire
event with just two trips to Baltimore:
once over the 2016 holidays to scout
venues and once more in the spring over
Mother’s Day weekend to meet her pho-
tographer, Barbara Oliveira, in person.
The rest of her research and planning she
did from back home in California, often
using social media to find vendors that
matched her and Carmen’s style.
“I was searching Instagram, finding
the type of florist that I like, and then
I’d email them,” Workneh recalls. “And
a couple times they would say, ‘Look,
your wedding’s too small,’ but they would
recommend someone that was a perfect
fit. That’s how I found Steelcut.”

of her photographer. “That’s another

Baltimore—people understood that not
everybody wanted that big, mass-pro-
duced wedding; we wanted something
unique and customized to each indi-
vidual person.”
Despite having a small wedding in
Baltimore, the couple found a way to
celebrate with friends back on the West
Coast, too. “We wound up having a
small party in Palm Springs for friends
in California a few weeks later,” Wor-
kneh explains.
“Baltimore’s this really special, unique
place, and I’m glad that we were able to
get married there and that people were
able to see where I’m from. Everything is
so much more affordable than having it
in one of those typical wedding desti-
nations, too,” she adds. “Baltimore is a
secret gem.”

DISCOVERING CHARM CITY
When Jasper Gaerlan and Kathryn De-
Raffele began researching locations for
their wedding after their January 2016
engagement, the couple first looked in
their Brooklyn neighborhood, and later
in a favorite vacation spot in upstate
New York. “In the end, mostly for finan-
cial reasons, it just was not feasible,”
DeRaffele recalls. “This was an event we
