BALTIMORE | 120 | WEDDINGS
says DeRaffele. As they planned their wed-
ding and future together, the couple says
they had an ulterior motive.
“It was very fun to create the vision of
Baltimore being a tourist destination, and
knowing in the back of our minds that we
were potentially trying to make it work to
move back down here, we also wanted to

Follow these tips to make it a smooth
experience.
GET TO KNOW THE CITY
“If you’re not familiar enough with
Baltimore, definitely take your own time to
come and see it,” advises Kathryn
DeRaffele, who was married in Baltimore
while living in Brooklyn. Visit the hotel you
plan to book in person before recom-
mending it to friends and family, and do
the drive from the hotel to your venue so
you can get a sense of their proximity.
CHECK YOUR DATES
As a medium-sized city, Baltimore hotels
and venues can book up quickly when the
town is busy with events. DeRaffele, for
instance, moved her wedding date a week
earlier in May to avoid conflicts with
college graduations and the Preakness.
“Look into holidays, community-wide
events, and other things going on locally,
because it will definitely make a differ-
ence,” she advises.
GET HELP FROM A LOCAL
Whether you call in favors from nearby
friends and family to scout locations or
hire a professional wedding planner,
having someone on your side in the city
makes a big difference. “Working with a
local planner allows couples to reap the
benefits of that planner’s local vendor
connections,” says Rachael Avara, an
event producer at Stephanie Bradshaw.
