Purl Stitch (p)
When purling a stitch, the working yarn is in front of the needle.
Insert the right needle from the back into the fi rst stitch on the left
needle, drape the working yarn from the front to the back around the
needle and pull it toward the back through the stitch.

Yarn Over (yo)
To make a yarn over, before knitting or purling the next stitch, place
the working yarn around the right needle from the front to the back.
Now, work the next stitch. You have increased one stitch.

Casting On

Th ere are many diff erent ways to cast on. Th e easiest one is the
backward loop cast on: Make a slipknot, slip the knot onto a knitting
needle, pull it snug, and hold the needle with the knot in your right
hand. Drape the working yarn from the right needle clockwise over
your left thumb and hold the end attached to the yarn ball with the
last three fi ngers of your left hand. With the right needle, take up the
working yarn from the front, thus forming another loop around the
right needle. Pull this loop tight and repeat until you’ve cast on the
required number of sts.

Knit Stitch (k)
When forming a knit stitch, hold the needle with the stitches in your
left hand while the working yarn lies behind the needle. Insert the tip
of the right needle from the front into the fi rst stitch on the left needle
and pull the working yarn back through the fi rst loop toward you,
then let the old stitch slide off the left needle.
