‘Thenoneday,I discovered
interiordesignerAbigailAhern
online.Sheis knownforcreating
dark,moodyinteriorsandit was a
light-bulbmomentforus.’
Inspired,Patipaintedher
sittingroomgrey.‘I waspetrified
atfirst,paintingthewallssodark,
butColinwasveryencouraging,’
shesays.Thesittingroomwas
repaintedeighttimesinoneyear,
pickingincreasinglydarkercolours,
untiltheyfoundtheidealshadeof
black.‘I calledmymuminPoland
totellhermydecoratingideasand
shethoughtI wascompletelycrazy,
butwhenshesawourhomeinthe
fleshshelovedit asmuchaswedo.’
Oncethesittingroomwas
done,Patiturnedherattentionto
therestofthehouse.Thedated
bathroomwasreplacedwithdark
flooringandwalls.Thekitchen
wasupdatedwithnewworktops
anddoors.‘OnceI paintedone
roomblack,wewantedtokeep
goingintherestofthehouse,’says
Pati.‘Weslowlyembracedbold
andmoodyinteriorsand have
neverlookedback.’
Takinga lookaroundthis
home,whichthecouplenowshare
withtheirdaughter,Olivia,12,
thereis somuchattentionto
detail.‘Weneedthingsthatare
robustandcantakea lotofwear
andtear,’saysPati.‘Industrialstyle
isperfectforthatlived-inlook.I’ve
addedwallpapers,plantsandpops
ofcolourwithquirkycushions.We
wantourhometofeelinviting.’
Overtime,thecouplehave
stampedtheirindividualityonto
thishousebuttheyarenotabout
tostophere.‘I’malwaysonthe
lookoutfornewprojects,’saysPati.
‘Ineverwantourhometoblendin
orbeboring.I wantourspace to
