At 9:32 a.m. on July 16, 1969, NASA launches a 363-foot-tall Saturn V rocket carrying the Apollo 11 spacecraft
and crew from Pad A, Launch Complex 39, at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. On board are astronauts
Neil A. Armstrong, commander; Michael Collins, command module pilot; and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin Jr., lunar
module pilot. Four days later, Armstrong would become the first human to walk on the moon.
