Branches
Branches – education, training and communication
Our communication with branches has improved greatly over the year.
NIHQ is striving to provide branches with as much support as possible.
Improvements include:
O A new and simplifi ed edition of the Branch Administration
Handbook
O Branch Resources Folder, including guides, presentations and
templates to support meetings and branch administration
O Reassessment of annual requirements – especially branch fi nances
O Branch representatives meetings – to ensure HQ is fully aware of
branch developments and needs (above right)
O Staff visits to branches and involvement in their activities.
Our international branch network gives us the opportunity to
increase our impact on education and to promote best practice by
direct interaction with students and those at the beginning of their
careers. Activities include:
O Recognising the achievements of outstanding young cadets and
professionals through prizes, awards and grants
O Securing partnerships with training centres, further education
institutions etc
O Establishing student support and mentoring schemes. In particular,
the US West Coast Branch has an NI cadet club at the local
maritime academy and the Belgium Branch organises dedicated
student debates four times a year
O Giving young members the opportunity to infl uence branch
activities and inviting them to participate as speakers (below right)

O Actively promoting maritime careers in schools
O Preparing local cadets for job interview
O Helping students to secure sea berths in different shipping
companies
O Promoting the importance of CPD, professional memberships and
networking for career development.
This is just a snippet of what the branches do in regards to education.
We do our best to showcase all of the branches and their hard work
in the reports we publish in Seaways every month. We also publish
a special branch feature to promote best practice and to share the
initiatives of our branches. For this feature we ask for a report about
the branch itself, rather than a report about an event.

Projects
The Navigator magazine
The Navigator magazine continues to be a fantastic vehicle for
‘inspiring professionalism in marine navigators’ by delivering key
professional messages to the ships and the navigators themselves.
With generous funding from IFAN and Trinity House we were able
to deliver 300,000 paper copies of The Navigator and many thousands
more copies by the app and free downloads. Issue 17 explored the
importance of shiphandling, with articles from Capt Nigel Allen FNI
and Capt George Sangil offering excellent advice. This issue also
launched our new Shiphandling Logbook to record and improve any
experience that offi cers might get. Issue 18 sought to clarify mariners’
understanding of VTS and the different services it provides. Such
confusion was obvious from the members’ survey that was delivered to
the IALA Conference (Inchon) in May and published in June Seaways.
