Today, weare just enjoyinga very subsidedfew laps of
WintonRaceway.And whatdowesay? Itdrives likean 86
that’s louder (and sounds quite good, actually, like it has
carburettors), the noiseclear and unfiltered thanks to the
lackofcarpetandsounddeadening.There’sa lotmore grip,
too,meaningyoucanman-handlethe 86 onthebrakes and
intocorners,basicallyflatteningthethrottlemid-corner the
momentyoucanstartopeningthesteering.Inalmostall areas
it feelsabout 15 percentbetterthana stocker,butalsoinvites
youtobea bitrough,poundingoverkerbsand– asiscommon
intheseries,althoughwedidn’ttry– flat-shiftingwithcruel,
mechanically unsympathetic abandon. (Rule-makers were
forcedtostipulatea lightenedclutchandflywheelaswiththe
heavierstockitems,flat-shifterskeptlunchinggearboxes.)
Itdoesn’tfeela greatdealfasterthanthestockcaronsticky
rubber,notunsurprisingly.AtWintonin2016,CameronHill
tookpoleinthe 86 RacingSerieswitha 1:37.9.Lastyear,Warren
Luff,forMOTOR, seta 1:42.8ina stock 86 GTSPerformance
PackonMichelinPrimacys.Ofcourse,mostofthedifference
isdowntothetyres.Butthat’stheideaofthe 86 RacingSeries:
makeallthecarsthesame,sothatanytimedifferenceisdown
