Installing old versions of iOS apps

‘Not on this iPhone/iPad’ header to see a list
of apps that aren’t on the device you’re using.
The list should include any apps you’ve bought
using other devices that were using the same
Apple ID. Tap on the blue cloud icon next to an
app to download and install it on the device
you’re using; this can take some time.
You also can’t transfer an old copy of an
app between iOS devices, with or without the
involvement of iTunes.

How can I install
missing fonts
on my iPad?
> Additional fonts have
to be installed using a
configuration profile,
designed for managed
iOS systems. Several
apps including AnyFont
(£1.99) and iFont (free)
handle this, and can
import fonts from the
internet, your iCloud
Drive or Dropbox, or
even attached to email
messages, so long as
they are in TrueType
or OpenType format.

Why can’t I send
SMS messages
when on Wi-Fi?
> To send SMSes, your
iPhone needs a mobile
network connection
unless Wi-Fi Calling is
turned on in Settings >
Phone. You may also
see an option there
to turn this on for your
other iCloud devices,
to use when your
iPhone isn’t nearby.

Q

Our iPad group for retired
people includes users
whose older hardware
is now stuck running iOS 9.3.5.
How can they install an old version
of Pages that is compatible with
that old version of iOS?
by JOHN FREEMAN

A

The App Store can provide
old versions of apps such
as Pages, Numbers and
Keynote that are compatible with
long-discontinued versions of iOS,
but they’re only available if that
particular Apple ID has previously
‘purchased’ them. This applies to
the account, even if the app was
originally installed on a different
device, such as an iPhone.
If your Apple ID hasn’t previously
obtained that app though, only its
latest version is available to you.
That version may be incompatible
with such old releases of iOS, and
therefore the ‘purchase’ is blocked
in the App Store on your old device.
Installing an old version can be
slow and complex, even when it’s
possible. First, open the App Store
and tap on the account icon at the
upper right. This takes you to your account
management page, where you should tap
Purchased, then My Purchases.
This lists all the apps you’ve purchased
using the currently signed in Apple ID. Tap the
