he Watch is known
for its features that help
track exercise effort. For
example, if you’re halfway
through a run and get interrupted,
your Watch can automatically pause
the workout. Go to My Watch, then
tap Workout and turn on Running Auto
Pause. If you’d rather stick to manually
pausing your workout, you can just
press the Digital Crown and side button
at the same time.
The Workouts
app will alert
you when
you achieve
certain
goals and

milestones. For example,
open the app and tap the
‘...’ next to Outdoor Run.
Tap Pace Alert, set your
goal, then choose Average
or Rolling. Your Watch will
now let you know when you
are ahead or behind your
target. The Watch also
lets you string multiple
workouts together. Once
you’ve started a workout,
open the Workout app and swipe right
on the screen, then tap the ‘+’.

Ensure accuracy
To calibrate your Watch, go to a flat
area on a clear day, open the Workouts

app, then tap Outdoor
Walk or Outdoor Run. Walk
or run at your normal pace
for 20 minutes. You can
also improve your Watch’s
accuracy by keeping your
personal info up to date in
the Health section under
the My Watch tab.
If your Watch isn’t giving
you credit for being active,
there are things you can try.
Apple advises that you allow the arm
wearing the Watch to swing naturally; if
you’re walking a dog, say, hold the leash
in your other hand. If you need to use
both hands, open the Workouts app
before you start and select Outdoor Walk.

Personal safety

1

Fall detection
Apple Watch Series 4’s automatic
fall detection offers to call the
emergency services if it detects
you’ve taken a hard fall. However,
the feature isn’t actually turned on
by default. To switch it on, head to
My Watch and tap Emergency SOS,
then turn on the switch.

Emergency SOS
If you need to contact the
emergency services but are unable
to get to your phone, your Watch
can do it for you. Go to My Watch >
Emergency SOS and turn on Hold
Side Button. That lets you hold the
Watch’s side button briefly to
call the emergency services.

T

Water lock
> Water Lock stops the
screen registering taps from
water droplets, such as in a
storm or pool. To activate it,
tap the droplet icon in Control
Centre. To turn it off,
rotate the Digital
Crown.

Tap on Workout data options
to see how well you’re doing.
