We know you’re huge fans of pets, so have us design a cross stitch of a beloved animal!

Q

Hello! I was
hoping you could
make a pattern of a
German shorthaired pointer, please?
I haven’t seen a pattern of one and
would love to stitch one. Thank you.
Shallynn Peay, via email

Durene says: Thanks so much for
your design request, Shallynn. I have
to admit that I wasn’t familiar with the
German shorthaired pointer before now,
but what a gorgeous breed they are! I love
their knowing expressions, kind eyes and
soft, floppy ears – they look so calm and
composed – and I tried to capture that
gentle temperament in the design. But
I also found out that they love to be
outside, for hours on end, so that’s why
I designed our German shorthaired pointer
sitting in the long grass!
This design is mostly in whole cross
stitch and backstitch – I’ve included a few
fractional stitches to create the definition
in his elegant muzzle, so watch out for
those. Poised for action, this dog has
a distinctive liver coat in tones of tan,
grey and white. The long grass in the
foreground is in two shades of green – the
backstitch detail is in a darker green to
give a sense of perspective to the design.

Project

  • Their tails are often docked, but
this is prohibited in some countries.

  • Author Robert B Parker was
fond of GSPs and his popular Spenser
    detective novels featured several of
    this breed, always named Pearl.

    • GSPs have webbed feet that
      make them excellent swimmers.

  • Dan Wehunt and his GSP,
Odessa, set a new dog mile world
record of four minutes and seven
    seconds in June 2019.
