M490 BLACKSTORM –
MASS EFFECT 2
The Blackstorm M490, AKA the ‘black hole
gun’ doesn’t merely kill your enemies,
although some would argue that should
be enough. No, in one of the finest
examples of overkill that we can think
of, this weapon creates a mini black hole
where you aim it: a singularity that pulls all
nearby objects and creatures into it and,
with the rapidly increasingly gravity at its
centre, rips them apart – basically bringing
a new meaning to the phrase ‘tearing
someone a new one’. The sheer power of
this weapon comes in handy when you’re
overcome by hordes of Husk enemies,
pulling them helplessly into the air where
they can contemplate their doom before
being turned into space-paste.
LANCER –
GEARS OF WAR
Probably the most iconic weapon in any
Xbox game. If you could single out one
thing that made an entire generation of
gamers fall in love with Gears Of War on
the 360, it would be the Lancer with its
integral chainsaw, for noisily trimming
the limbs off of Locust enemies. It’s
the weapon for all encounters, with
all the stopping power of your typical
assault rifle crossed with the chopping
capabilities of your favourite tree-
feller. And with Gears 5, the Lancer still
provides the most fun you can have in a
shooter. We actually now find ourselves
wanting the Swarm to get nose-to-nose
with Kait, JD and the rest. “Come on then!
Oh, you want some of this?!”
