Our first reaction was that this
would be a two-player co-op game,
but wouldn’t that take away from the
first game’s mood and atmosphere?
You needn’t worry, though, as this will
once again be a single-player journey.
What is surprising, however, is
that although Six returns, she’ll be
your AI companion while you get to
play as Mono. Together, you’ll need
to work together in order to reach
the mysterious Signal Tower which is
distorting the world around you.

Double trouble
Six won’t be playing a diminished role
as someone you need to protect, and
at times she’ll take the lead and help
Mono progress. For example, at one
point in the trailer we see Six holding
out her hand on the other side of a
broken bridge for Mono to catch as he
jumps across a chasm.
Unlike the previous game, in which
you spent your time exploring the

indoor environment of ‘The Maw’, this
time the majority of the game will
take place outside, with one of the
locations being a dark forest. Don’t
expect these locations to be more
pleasant, though: this is a twisted and
oppressive world, and you never know
what you’ll bump into.
The trailer also shows Mono
attacking enemies with what looks
like a ladle, and brandishing a pipe a
little later. Although you’ll be able to
wield weapons, this new mechanic is
intended to add, according the game’s
press release, “an extra layer of
complexity to the game’s puzzles and
encounters with enemies”.
Evidently this sequel will be quite
different to the previous instalment.
Talking to Eurogamer, senior narrative
designer Dave Mervik spoke about
the game’s themes. In the first Little
Nightmares the team explored themes
of greed and consumption, and the
sequel is all about escapism. “We’d
like to explore the rich details in what
this theme means, and how far can
we take it,” says Mervic. “What does
it mean for the world when it wants
to escape something, and then what
does that mean when you take that to
Little Nightmares and amplify it in the
way we do?” Hopefully we’ll find out
next year when the game arrives. Q

We absolutely adored Little
Nightmares. Well, ‘adored’ maybe
isn’t the right word given that it
was completely unsettling, chilling,
suspenseful and scary, but we enjoyed
it nonetheless. With the news of a
sequel, then, we are understandably
overjoyed. The announcement trailer
features the return of Six, the yellow
hooded player character from the first
game, working together with a new
character, a young boy named Mono.
Like Six, Mono has somehow ended
up in this strange, terrifying world and
must find a way to escape.

The original name for the first Little Nightmares was ‘Hunger’, which makes a lot of sense when you play the game

ABOVE While you
won’t control
Six, she’ll be
around to lend a
helping hand.
