to explore, encountering alien species,
discovering secrets and collecting
loot on your journey. This is still an
Everspace game, however, so you’ll
be doing all of this in your very own
customisable ship while clashing
with a range of different enemies in
intense dogfights. And, because this
is an RPG, you can level up your ship to

gain permanent stat boosts like extra
health, improved weapon damage and
reduced cooldowns, among others.

Space for story
There’s a stronger focus on story
this time, too. In the previous game
the narrative was revealed through a
series of flashbacks, and these were
relayed to you every time you jumped
into hyperspace to reach a new
sector. You played a space pilot with
amnesia who discovers he’s a clone of
one Adam Roslin, a cloning scientist
suffering from a life-threatening
disease inflicted upon him by the
game’s main antagonist, Admiral
Gork. Adam created the clone just
before placing himself in cryostasis
at a secret location elsewhere in the
galaxy in order to stop the spread
of his illness. The clone was to be
provided with the coordinates in order
to make his way to Adam and fulfil his
purpose of being a body replacement,
but something went wrong in the
cloning process. Instead of generating
a blank vessel, a whole new person
was created. After realising he
could not take the clone’s life, Adam
chooses to help them. Everspace 2
takes place after these events. You
are one of Adam’s surviving clones
who is on the run from the authorities
after defeating Admiral Gork. Your
existence as a clone is a crime, and
while trying to survive you must
discover what it means to be human.
Until its announcement, we didn’t
realise how much we wanted another
Everspace game. Now, however,
we can’t wait to get our hands on
it. Sadly, that won’t be for a while,
though, as the game is in hypersleep
until sometime in 2021. Q

A sequel to 2017’s science fiction
space shooter from Rockfish Games
is on its way and it looks spectacular.
The first Everspace was already a
beautiful game but the developers
have clearly ramped up the visuals in a
big way for its follow-up. The changes
don’t stop there, though. In an effort
to evolve the gameplay, but keep
most of what everyone loved about
the previous game’s space combat,
the developers have moved away
from a roguelike adventure model and
adopted a full open-world RPG design.
In the first game you had just one
destination to reach with various
sectors you’d pass through – these
were self-contained areas in which
missions would take place. In this
sequel, though, you’re given a galaxy

systems should
dovetail with
the excellent
combat of the
original nicely.
