BELOW The Jedi
Order is gone,
and Cal has had
to survive on
his own.

Parrying

The combat will be more or
less familiar to anyone who’s
played a third-person action
game, with basic moves such
as light and heavy attacks
supplemented with a nicely
flexible dodge move and an
all-important block shoulder-
button. Time your blocks right
and it becomes a parry, and
it’s here that Jedi: Fallen Order
reminds us most of Dark Souls
and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
in particular. The goal is to
break an opponent’s guard,
Sekiro-like, via attacks, blocks
and parries, before landing a
deadly strike. Each enemy type
demands a slightly different
approach, so you’ll really need
to think on your feet.

Quest

The most recent story trailer revealed
Cal’s quest. It turns out he’s not just
on the run from the Empire and trying
to survive the hunt, he also appears
to be searching for an ancient Jedi
relic, something that the Second
Sister and the Empire definitely don’t
want him to find. This gives the game
its more exploratory, Tomb Raider-ish
feel as you’ll be guiding Cal to some
ancient sites of Jedi power across
the galaxy in his search for the relic.
We also see that he’s aided in his
mission by a couple of key allies,
human Jedi Cere Junda and a slightly
grumpy four-armed Latero pilot
called Greez Dritus.

Respawn

The studio behind Apex Legends has
been hard at work on this latest Star
Wars game for EA. Respawn CEO Vince
Zampella had initially tasked game
director Stig Asmussen with heading
up a team to make a third-person
action adventure game. The initial
fruits of their labour, clearly
influenced by Hidetaka Miyazaki’s
Soulsborne games, impressed EA
bosses enough that they suggested
it should become a Star Wars game.
Collecting talent from the teams
behind God Of War, the Batman:
Arkham games, Metal Gear Solid and
Titanfall, Asmussen’s superstar team
got to work creating Fallen Order.
