Silver Efex Pro has had an interesting
journey over the years. It was initially
created by Nik Software, then migrated
to Google when it acquired the com-
pany in 2012, only to be sold to DxO in
2017, where it currently remains. Unlike
many other photo editing applications,

purpose of working within a black-and-
white photography workflow. As such,
the level of control that you have with
every aspect of toning, grain and detail
is unrivaled. Truly, it’s impressive when
you dive into the weeds and see just
how granular your controls are for every
aspect of a black-and-white treatment.
A feature worth highlighting is the
way you approach localized editing.
One of the Nik Collection’s hallmark
features is its use of Control Points,

built atop its U-Point technology, which

uses radial selections to perform tar-

geted adjustments. Admittedly, I’ve

become accustomed to the detailed

control of adjustment brushes in Light-

room, but there’s a certain quality to

these Control Points that makes local-

ized adjustments very enjoyable, espe-

cially when you turn on the mask view.

B&W Is A Creative Process

I’m not advocating that black-and-white

should be the only treatment or work-

flow that photographers practice. Not

by a long shot. However, when you fac-

tor in how much there is to learn about

composition, tonality and editing when

you remove color from the equation, it’s

hard not to spend more time exploring

the creative opportunities that black-

and-white treatments can bring to your
