Black& whiteis nota restingplaceforuneventfulcolourimagery.

Thismediumrequireslightandmagic,butmanyphotographersmakethe

classicmistakeof simplyconvertinga flat colourimagein anattemptto

rescueanimagefortheirefforts.It is imperativethattheimageis studied

foritscolourcontent.Conflictingorunharmoniouscolourscanmakean

imageunbalanced,solearntospottheseclashes.Donotfall into a boring

black & white trap just because there’s simply no light.

Inkydarkroomeffects

Onefabulouswaytogetaninkydarkroomeffectis tousethe

ColourBalanceadjustmentlayerin Photoshop.Thissubtletoolgivesa

cross-processedeffectin colour,butalsotonesblack& whiteimages,

byaddingcolourintoyourshadows,midtonesorhighlights.Playvery

carefullywiththesettings(just+3or-3is enoughperchannel),adding

subtleamountsof cyanorblue to the shadows, as well as red and

yellow into the highlights.
