Urban sketcher Suhita Shirodkar
(suhitasketch.com) draws buildings
very much as she draws people:
with feeling for the personality of
the structure and the belief that
her viewer will fill in the blanks she
leaves. As a result, Shirodkar focuses
on articulating the “bits” that speak
most to her. “With the Flatiron, it’s
the swooping upside-down ‘V’ it
makes against the sky and the hints
of ornamentation,” she says. The

many windows and multiple stories

of the building are suggested in her

sketches but not drawn with detail.

“I see everything as alive and mov-

ing, and structures with which I feel

a connection always have personality

to me,” says Shirodkar. “The Flatiron

Building stands out as almost defiant,

but it carries its attitude with ele-

gance, grace and even whimsy. I find

the juxtaposition of those personality

traits fascinating.”
