Miura acknowledges that this
moment is when he must enforce a
“real willingness to ruin a piece which
I do, often.” He believes that if he isn’t
able to make that leap of faith, he
won’t achieve the results he wants. “I
might wipe out a perfectly good car to
start over again,” he says. “That used
to be a scary thing to do, but I realized
that I needed to make that leap as
part of my process.”

Finding the Answers
Miura works on large pieces over
a period of weeks or months, allow-
ing himself some mental distance
before going back with fresh eyes. He
usually works in batches on similar
subject matter because each piece
lends itself to more questions as he
strives to make each version better.
He often finds himself asking, “ ‘What
