HOW TO Connect to a VPN

Launch the app
You’ll need to create an account, so
start by filling in email and password details.
You’ll need to confirm your email address, too.
Once you’ve confirmed your address, you’ll
be able to switch on the VPN.

Change countries
A benefit of VPNs is that you can
“pretend” to be in a different country, to access
streaming content not available in your location,
or evade government filters. Tap “Auto” then
choose a country and wait for it to reconnect.

Give the app permission
to access settings
To use the app you’ll need to give it permission
to access VPN Configurations. Read the
warning in the dialog box and then click Allow.
You’ll have to type in your passcode.

Add a trusted network
If you’re connected to your home or
work Wi–Fi you don’t need a VPN, so you can
set it not to automatically connect when you’re
on those networks. Tap Settings, then Trusted
Networks, then the “+” next to the network.

JARGON BUSTER

Logging is a process of
collecting data from users
and selling it to third
parties. Lots or free VPNs
do it. Find one, like Tunnel
Bear, that doesn’t.

GENIUS TIP

You can find details of the
server you’re connected
to and your IP address in
Settings > VPN. Tap the “i”
next to the VPN’s name to
see further details.

Choose an app
In the App Store, search for “VPN”.
Read the description, reviews, and terms and
conditions of apps that interest you. Check
how the service treats your data, whether it’s
logged, and whether the service displays ads.

Download the app
Once you’ve chosen an app, check how
its free service is structured. Most are free to
download, though only offer a free trial version.
Choose one that offers free service beyond
just a trial period. Tap Get when you’re happy.
