PERFECT FINISH

ollecting buttons is part of the fun
of crocheting! They’re a classic and
stylish fastening method, and
sewing them onto crochet fabric is simple,
but there are some key points to remember.
It’s a good idea to choose your buttons
before you start crocheting. That way, you
can make sure your buttons are the right

size for the buttonholes and the button
bands you crochet. Try making a test
swatch of the buttonhole you’ll be making
to check that it works with your buttons.
It’s also a good idea to make sure the
colour of your buttons works with your yarn
colour, and avoid buttons with sharp edges,
especially on baby items. Before sewing on

your buttons, use pins to mark their
position, lining them up carefully with the
position of the buttonholes. If your yarn is
very chunky, you may need to find a
matching yarn in a finer weight for sewing
your buttons on. Buttons aren’t just
functional though – they also work as an
accent on bags, hats, scarves and more.

A BUTTON

Now bring the yarn back to the front of the
fabric, but not through the button – it needs
to be underneath the button. Wrap the yarn
a couple of times around the yarn under the
button, pulling the yarn tight.

4

Take the yarn to the back of the fabric and
secure it in place. By wrapping the yarn
underneath the button, you make a small shank,
which stops the fabric from rubbing on the
button and fraying.

1

Cut some matching yarn, weave it in on the
wrong side of the fabric to secure it. Bring the
needle out at the pin mark or where you want
the button, slip the button onto the needle and
pull the yarn through.

2

Take the yarn back through the button and
the crochet fabric, pulling the yarn firmly to
secure the button. Bring the needle out again,
through the fabric and the button, and back
down again.
