PERFECT FINISH

L

ike any fabric item, your makes will
need washing from time to time to
keep them looking good. This might
seem a bit scary if you haven’t done it
before, but you just need to take a few
simple precautions to ensure you get a
perfect result.
When washing any item, you’d usually
refer to the label for guidance. With your

crochet, you need to refer to the yarn’s ball
band for care information, so keep it safe.
The yarn’s ball band should tell you what
temperature to wash your item at and
whether or not it can go in the machine. See
our guide below for the best way to wash
your makes.
Always dry your makes flat – never hang
up your crochet fabric – because the weight

of the garment will stretch out the yarn.
Once dry, store your crochet item folded,
don’t hang it up. Some items, such as
garments or lace shawls, will need to go
through the blocking process after every
wash to help them keep their shape. See
overleaf for our guide to this. Remember, if
you treat your crochet makes with love,
they’ll last for years to come.

Once washed, lay the item on top of a towel
and roll up the towel to squeeze out the
excess moisture (do not wring!).

4

Gently pull the item back into shape and
leave it to dry somewhere flat, such as on a
board or a folded blanket covered with towels.

The ball band on the yarn you’ve used should
tell you the best way to wash the item you’ve
made with that yarn. If you’ve used more
than one yarn on an item, choose the gentlest
washing method.

2

If your item needs to be handwashed, soak
it for 30 minutes or so in a bowl of lukewarm
water with a mild detergent. Don’t rub or you
may felt the piece.
