fter blocking, your item will be
ready for the most exciting bit –
sewing up! This will turn a few oddly
shaped pieces into an item you can use.
There are many ways to seam your
makes, and we’ve covered four of the most
popular methods below. If you need to pin

together your pieces, match up each row
beforehand to make sewing easier and
more accurate.
For three of these methods, you need a
large-eye, blunt tapestry needle and
matching yarn, about 50cm (20in) long
(we’ve used coloured yarn below so you can

see the seam). Thread yarn onto the needle
and secure it at the back of the fabric. Bring
the needle up to the edge of the fabric,
where you wish to start the seam. Then
proceed as instructed below. With these
needle seams, always work one stitch in
from the edge of the fabric.

SEWING UP

Sewing up your crochet pieces is the most exciting part!

Also known as ladder stitch, pin the
two pieces right sides together. *Insert the
needle from right to left, taking the yarn over
the two seams. Repeat from *. Leave a gap of
around 0.5cm between your stitches.

Place your pieces WS together for a decorative
seam (or RS together for a less visible seam).
Join yarn to corner and ch1 (t-ch for dc). Work
double crochet sts along the edge, inserting the
hook into both layers. Alternatively, work slip sts.

Pin your two pieces right sides together.
Working from right to left, through both layers,
bring needle up in the hole above the 2nd stitch.
Take needle back down in the hole above the 1st
stitch and then up again in the hole above the
3rd stitch. Continue in this way along the edge.

Lay your pieces out flat, RS up. Start with needle
at front lower-left of right piece, above 1st stitch.
*Insert needle into front of left piece, above 1st
stitch; bring it out above 2nd stitch. Rep from *
but on right piece. Rep from * on left piece with
2nd and 3rd stitches. Cont as set. Pull yarn tight
every few sts for a near-invisible seam.
