BASIC TECHNIQUES


MAIN PIECE
Ch90.
Row 1 (RS) Dc into the second ch from the
hook, dc into each ch to end, turn. [89 sts]
Row 2 (WS) Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in
same st, dc into each st to end, turn.
Row 3 Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in the
same st, ch1, skip the next st, dc into the
next st; repeat from
to end, turn.
Row 4 Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in the
same st, dc into the next ch-1 sp, ch1, skip
next st; repeat from
to the last st, dc into
the last st, turn.
Row 5 Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in the
same st, ch1, skip the next st, dc into the
next st; repeat from
to end, turn.
Rows 6-9 Repeat Rows 4 and 5 twice. Fasten
off at the end of the last row.


Rotate work and join yarn at the corner of the
foundation ch.
Row 1 Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in same
st, dc into each st to end, turn. [89 sts]
Rows 2-9 Repeat Rows 2 to 9 as above.
Fasten off and weave in ends.


CREATING RUFFLE
Using a tapestry needle, thread a 50cm
length of yarn. Work a 1cm wide running
stitch along the second row of dc, from top to
bottom, when reaching the bottom rotate
and repeat up the other side, along the
second row of dc, to the top.

Holding both ends of yarn, gather up your
finished piece until it measures 12.5cm.

Secure by tying both ends together to create
the ruffle and weave in ends.

CENTRAL BAND
This piece of the frill is worked from the
bottom up.
Foundation row Join yarn to the end of the
second dc row, ch1 (does not count as st), dc
into the end of the same row, dc into the end
of the first dc row, dc into the foundation
chain, dc into the end of the first dc row on
the other side of the ruffle, dc into the end of
the second dc row on the other side of the

Q A 3mm (US C/2 or D/3) hook

DOUBLE CROCHET FRILL


Dress up a simple T-shirt or top with Nicky Hale’s
gorgeous little button-studded ruffle.

Rows 1-32 Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in
the same st, dc into each of the next 4 sts,
turn.

You may need to increase or reduce the
number of rows worked to get the correct
band length.
Row 33 When the band is the correct length,
dc together the top of the band to the top
centre of the ruffle working 1dc into the end
of the second dc row, 1dc into end of first dc
row, 1dc into foundation chain, 1dc into end of
first dc row on other side of ruffle, 1dc into
the end of the second dc row on the other
side of the ruffle.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

TO MAKE UP
Place the buttons evenly along the band,
stitching through the band and ruffle with
the needle and matching thread to secure.
Gently steam block to set the ruffle edges
(see instructions on page 131).
