tart off by making a chain length –
try 23 chains and then use one of
the methods below to work your
first half treble stitch into the foundation
chain. One method might suit you better, so
try both.


Make sure you insert the hook under two
loops of the chain stitch (the top front loop
and the loop at the back of the chain). Some
patterns ask you to insert the hook under
just the top front loop of the chain, and you
can also use this method if your chain is a

bit tight. If it’s very tight, undo it and rework
it using a larger hook. Then switch back to
the smaller hook.
Method 2 gives a more solid finish to your
fabric and maintains the plaited look of the
front of the chain, which looks neater.

When working half treble crochet, wrap yarn
round the hook first, then insert the hook into
the 3rd chain from the hook, as shown above.
