resize and reposition type, with the type cursor inserted
anywhere in the text, press-and-hold the Command
(PC: Ctrl) key, and you’ll see a transform box appear
around the text. Release the Command (PC: Ctrl) key
when you’re done.
Our font size is around 105 pixels. We also selected all
the letters with the Type tool and set the Tracking in the
Character panel (Window>Character) to 100.
Step Four: To give the text some life, we’ll add a simple
Gradient fill layer. Go to Layer>New Fill Layer>Gradient,
and click OK in the New Layer dialog. In the Gradient Fill
dialog that appears, click on the Gradient thumbnail to
open the Gradient Editor. Click on the gear icon near the
top right, and choose the Color Harmonies 2 set in the
drop-down menu. Click Append in the resulting dialog,
and then choose the Orange, Yellow preset. Click OK to
close the Gradient Editor, and then click OK to close the
Gradient Fill dialog.
Make sure the fill layer is above the text layer in the
Layers panel, and then Option-click (PC: Alt-click) between
the two layers to clip the fill layer to the text layer so the
effect only appears on the text, not on the image itself.
Change this layer’s blend mode to Overlay near the top left
of the Layers panel.
Step Five: Now that we have our background set,
it’s time to get busy with a brush or two. Before we
begin painting, we need to choose our colors. For this
tutorial, I thought it’d be fun to pick shades of orange
and yellow, so let’s make some swatches. Open your
Swatches panel (Window>Swatches), click on the flyout
menu at the top right, and choose Preset Manager. With
Swatches selected in the Preset Type drop-down menu,
click on the first swatch, hold the Shift key, click on the
last swatch, and click the Delete button. Click Done to
close the Preset Manager. This gives us an empty Swatches
panel in which to build our set of colors for this project.
