Klokki
Klokki, a time tracker for the Mac, promises to automate tracking
your time based on rules. Klokki lives in your menu and, after
you’ve set it up for a specific app or job category, it will work on
its own.
Auto-Tracking with Klokki requires you to set up rules with two
categories: those that start timing if any of the rules apply, and
those that start when all conditions have been met.
Setting up a rule is easy in the large window, but does require
some advance planning. For example, you can have a condition
named “Launched Application,” and another called “Active
Application.” The first activates the timer as soon as the app is
opened, while the latter starts timing only when the app is active.
Combining this with a filename allows for a good level of control
over what you want to track.
Better yet, Klokki also offers a rule that starts the timer only
when a window title meets a condition. I tried that by setting
the window title for Ulysses, my editor, to contain “Klokki time
tracker.” The developer does warn that Auto-Tracking may be
flaky because of macOS limitations; but, on my system, the only
thing that didn’t work some of the time was pausing the timer
when I switched to a different sheet inside Ulysses, or setting
an “Upon Launch of Application” rule that should activate my
Ulysses timer again after quitting the app.
Klokki’s reporting capabilities are brilliant. You’ll get a really
nice overview in numbers and graphically of your activities in a
beautifully designed window, which you can export to a CSV file.
Finally, Klokki also allows you to set a different price/ fee per job so
that you can easily create invoices from the CSV file. n >
