Step One: Open Photoshop and
create a new document. Set the
Width to 2500 pixels and the
Height to 1024 pixels, and click
Create or OK. Go to File>Place
Embedded and select the image
that you want to use as the back-
ground for this technique. Drag on
the corners of the transformation
handles to scale the image to fill
the canvas before pressing Enter
to commit the transformation.
If you’d like to download the
low-res watermarked version of
this image to follow along, click
this link, log in with your Adobe
ID, and click the Save to Library
button. Drag the image from your
Libraries panel (Window>Libraries)
into the new file you just created
and resize it as described above.

Step Two: Go to Image >Adjust-
ments>Curves, add a central point
to the curve, and pull it down-
ward almost an entire grid space
to substantially darken the back-
ground. Click OK. Then go to
Layer>New Adjustment Layer>
Hue/Saturation, and click OK.
Check the Colorize box in the
Properties panel (Win dow>Prop-
erties), and set the Hue to 126 and
Saturation to 25.
Click on the layer mask for the
adjustment layer, press X to set the
Foreground color to black, switch
to the Brush tool (B), and set its
Opacity to around 50% in the
Options Bar. Use the brush with a
large soft round tip to paint on the
mask and remove the Hue/Satura-
tion effect from the dark shadow
areas of the background
