[ 39 ]› › DOWN & DIRTY TRICKSStep Five: We’ll first focus on the shapes
for the word “THE.” Click on that layer to
make it active in the Layers panel, and press
Command-T (PC: Ctrl-T) for Free Transform.
Hold the Shift key and scale the word down to
about 75% of its size. Press Enter to commit
the transformation.
Use the Delete Anchor Point tool (nested
below the Pen tool [P] in the Toolbar)
to remove the undercarriage of the T. Simply
click on the control points that you wish
to delete.
Then use the Path Selection tool (A) to
move the H and E closer to the T. Switch to
the Direct Selection tool (nested below the
Path Selection tool in the Toolbar) to select
individual anchor points. With this tool, the
selected points can be moved and the tan-
gent handles coming off the points can be
adjusted to control the curve of the path as
it passes through the point. Work with the
anchor points until the bottom of the letters
are similar to how they’re shown here. You
may need to use the Delete Anchor Point and
Add Anchor Point tools as you go.
Step Six: Click on the “BLACK” text layer
to make it active, and use Free Transform
to enlarge it to about 125%. Now adjust its
anchor points. Add the “horns” to the back
of the B, a curl on the lower portion of the L,
and a curl to the right leg of the K. Make sure
there’s enough room between the L and the
A to nestle the TH of the word “THE” into it.
Step Seven: Finally, increase the size of
the word “CRYSTAL” to about 125%, and
then work on adjusting its points. The most
important change is the bottom curve of
the C. It should extend over in a smooth curve
to almost touch the bottom of the S. Likewise,
with the lower leg of the R; it should extend
to meet the point of the C. Then add a curl
to the last L. Finally, fit the word against the
bottom of the word “BLACK.”
