- LIVE LASSO TOOL SWITCHING
Holding down the Shift key and tapping the L key will let you cycle
through all the Lasso tools in the Toolbar. But if you use the Polygo-
nal Lasso tool, you can switch between drawing straight selections
and freeform selections. While you’re using the Polygonal Lasso tool,
click-and-hold with the mouse button, and then hold down the Option
(PC: Alt) key to temporarily switch to the regular Lasso tool. Make
your freeform selection, and then release the Option (PC: Alt) key to
switch back to the Polygonal Lasso.
This pic of a guitar has a nice straight line, except for where the
finger gets in the way. So the Polygonal Lasso worked great for the
straight edge, and then switching to the freeform Lasso allowed me
to draw around the finger. When I released the Option (PC: Alt) key,
it switched back to the Polygonal Lasso.
Photoshop.) After you paint an area that you want to edit with the
Adjustment Brush (K), your mask will look like a big red cloudy area.
(Turn on the Mask checkbox at the bottom right to see the mask overlay.)
Far down near the bottom of the Adjustment Brush settings
you’ll find the Range Mask drop-down menu. Change it to Color or
Luminosity, and then use the settings below the menu to isolate the
range you want the mask to cover. In the example at the bottom of
the page, Luminosity was selected, and then I used the Luminance
Range slider to limit the mask to the brighter end of the image, caus-
ing the mask to tighten up to only pixels within that tonal range.
- EASIER POSITIONING OF LAYER STYLES
If you’ve ever used Drop Shadows, Gradient Overlays, or similar effects
within the Layer Style feature, it can be frustrating trying to adjust the
position of the effects with the sliders. But you don’t have to use the
sliders! With the Layer Style dialog open, just click-and-drag on the
canvas to move the effect around. No need for sliders or numbers to
position it. This works with the following layer styles: Inner Shadow,
Satin, Gradient Overlay, Pattern Overlay, and Drop Shadow. Bonus tip:
Where applicable, make sure Use Global Light is turned on for each
of the applied layer styles so that all relative styles stay in sync when
you’re positioning one of them. - USE SELECT SUBJECT FOR A QUICK
START TO ANY SELECTION
Try the Select Subject feature to see what you get as a starting selection.
It often gets you about 80% of what you need very quickly. Simply
click on the layer in the Layers panel that you want the feature to
reference, and then go to Select>Subject. - USE RANGE MASKS IN CAMERA RAW
TO REFINE SELECTIONS
Like other selection tools, we now have the ability to refine selection
masks inside Adobe Camera Raw (ACR). (If you’re using non-RAW
images, you can launch ACR through Filter>Camera Raw Filter in
