TOOLS

Cometin is a slightly unusual app
in that it provides a container for
lots of little Android tools, tweaks
and options, which it refers to as
‘modules’. Open Cometin and tap
‘Browse all modules’ to see what’s
available. Among the modules
currently on offer are tools for
darkening your screen beyond
Android’s stock brightness tools,
a timer for turning off
your display after a
specific period (useful
if you’re watching a
movie) and the option
to set up a parallel
profile for your device
(for work, for example).
It’s a clever idea and
we look forward to
seeingtheselection of tools grow.

There are a
number of apps
that turn photos
into drawings
but few are as
effective at
transforming your
pictures as
Graphite, which
offers a wide
range of styles, from ballpoint pen
to technical drawing. It’s easy to use,
too – just select your photo and apply
your style. Further customisation can
be carried out by tapping Edit. The
Graphite app and many of its tools and
effects are free to use, but you’ll need
to pay £6 per year to
unlock the full gamut of
options and remove
watermarks – which is a bit
annoying.

Every software
developer
seems to be
updating its
apps with a
dark mode
right now, but
Opera has
decided to take things a step further.
The latest version of Opera for Android
(not to be confused with Opera Mini
and Opera Touch) introduces a clean
new look that allows you to choose
from a number of colourful themes.
The new interface feels nippier, thanks
to reduced animation times and quicker
paths to getting things
done. Version 54 also
introduces built-in
support for Bitcoin via its
CryptoWalletfeature.

Previously, the
Guardian’s Daily
news app was
available
exclusively for
iPad users, so
it’s great that the national newspaper
has broadened its support for iPhones
and – for the first time – Android
devices of all shapes and sizes. Into the
bargain, the newly updated app
benefits from a redesign that aims to
deliver a clean, distraction-free reading
experience. On the downside, while the
app itself is free, you’ll
need a Guardian digital
subscription (currently £12
per month) to access its
fullcontent.
