PATTERN NOTES
The hat is worked in the round, from the
bottom up. After a twisted rib brim, the
cable pattern is worked around the hat.
The crown is closed with a series of centred
double decreases.


The mitts are worked in the round, starting
with a twisted rib cuff. The thumb gusset
i s worke d at t h e s a m e t i m e a s t h e c a bl e
pattern on the back of the hand. Stitches
are held for the thumb while the top of the
hand is completed in twisted rib. Finally,
the thumb is worked in twisted rib.

HAT
BRIM
Using 3.25mm circular needles, 30cm


long, cast on 120 ( 140 :160: 180 ) sts.
Pm and join to work in the round, taking
care not to twist sts.

Work in Twisted Rib pattern for 3cm.

BODY
Repeating sts 6 ( 7 :8: 9 ) times around,
work Chart A once.
Cont in Twisted Rib Pattern until hat meas
15 (16½:18: 19 ) cm from cast-on edge.

CROWN
Note: Throughout the crown, cont in patt,
working all sts as they present (K1tbl and
P), which may sometimes mean working
three consecutive sts as tbl.

comfortably on the needle.

Set-up round: Remove beg of rnd mrk,
work 10 sts, pm for new beg of rnd.

Weave in all ends. Steam or spray block
gently, without stretching rib, and
following any yarn care instructions

Using 3.25mm DPNs (or circular needles,
60cm long, and the Magic Loop method),

Work in Twisted Rib pattern for 3 ( 3 :4) cm.

EXPLOITING THE understated
elegance of twisted ribbing, this hat
and matching mitts have a comfortable
and super-stretchy fabric. The design
by S oph i e Mc K a n e u s e s a n e at c a bl e
stitch pattern inspired by flocks of
migrating birds. For her project, she
has used a Regia yarn called Premium
Merino Yak, a blend of wool, yak and
polyamide that’s ideal for accessories
and luxurious socks, and comes in
muted shades with a vintage look.

Yarn note: This is enough
yarn to make both hat and
mitts. Only 1 ball is needed if
just making hat or mitts.
