Designer insight
“Folk art and folk costumes drive my creative
process. Besides my own Norwegian cultural
heritage, and not least my roots in northern
Norway’s culture, are the Ur-cultures from Gaia’s
northern hemisphere with which I feel a relationship
in regards to form. This includes, for example, the
Inuit, west-Siberian and Mongolian indigenous
people’s traditional garments, but also Japanese and
Chinese traditional clothing. It isn’t always materials
and ornaments but, perhaps more often, the
decorative elements which are fascinating. I wonder
over these simple, geometric forms which build
garments as one raises architectural structures.
At the same time, I have a deep respect for the
ecological where man uses resources optimally
and, for the most part, uses local raw materials.
The result is functional and beautiful garments
with the strength and quality to withstand use
for generations.” Margaretha Finseth
