APPLE AND DISNEY – A FUTURE THAT
COULD HAVE BEEN, OR COULD STILL BE


With both Apple TV+ and Disney+ up and
running, two of the world’s undoubted media
giants are finally directly competing with
each other – a development that makes it
unsurprising Disney CEO Bob Iger has now
resigned from Apple’s board of directors.


But could Apple and Disney have enjoyed an
even more symbiotic relationship than the one
Disney+’s debut on Apple operating systems has
made a reality? That possibility has been teased
quite a few times down the years, including by
RBC Capital Markets, which argued in a 2017
research note that Apple actually buying
Disney could be justified by “the ability to do
things together that neither company, nor any
other company, could do.”


Now, it has been suggested by Iger himself that
his relationship with Apple’s late co-founder,
Steve Jobs, could have facilitated such a major
deal. In the words of the Disney boss in his
recently published memoirs: “I believe that if
Steve were still alive, we would have combined
our companies, or at least discussed the
possibility very seriously.”


Given that rumors of Apple purchasing or
merging with Disney started circulating way
back in 2006 at the latest, they seem likely
to continue for years to come. As for if such an
agreement is ever likely to come to fruition, well,
