But for this technology to be adopted by the
wider world, it needs to make sense financially.
Tesla vehicles are significantly more expensive
than similar fossil-fuel-powered SUVs, but the
charging offers some benefits. The long-range
version of the Model 3, for example, offers a 75
kWh battery pack with a 310-mile range, with a
full charge costing around $11.47. This is $3.70
per 100 miles of mixed city and freeway driving,
or 3.7 cents per mile - 80% less than the cost per
mile to drive the most popular gas-powered
cars, around 20 cents per mile.


Of course, there’s no guaranteeing gas prices will
stay high or that energy prices will stay low, but
with so many incentives to switch to renewable
energy which is significantly cheaper than fossil
fuels once initial investments pay off, the future
looks bright for e-car owners.
