Useful Handcrafts

Besides quilting I dabble in pottery.
I am really a novice but it’s a great
group of ladies and a few gentlemen
that all get together weekly and we
just work on whatever strikes us in
the moment. I am inspired by them
and what they create. I fi nd that pot-
tery and quilting appeal to me in the
way that both creations are useful and
beautiful. All of our ancestors used
pottery and quilts. I fi nd comfort in
that. I also love hiking, kayaking, and
walking with my dogs. Other than
that, I love to read a good book with a
hot cup of tea.

Evolution of Style
I would say my quilting style has
evolved in many ways. One of them
is simply because I have more skills
now. As I advance in skills, I feel more
comfortable tackling new things. I am
more adventurous with patterns and
color. I am not afraid to mix diff erent
textiles. I feel like nothing I create is
going to be “ruined” by experiment-
ing. I will just learn a lesson and move
on to the next thing. I love to per-
sonalize things and make them my
own. My favorite quilts are quilts with
meaning or ones that tell a story.

Best Tip
I think the best tip I can give about
quilting or that I have heard about
quilting is that there are no rules.
When we put rules on things we are
confi ned by those rules. When we
are just free to create whatever our
heart desires that’s when the magic
happens. I know that for myself, I thor-
oughly enjoy it when someone takes a
pattern I designed and they personal-
ize it and make it their own. I encour-
age my students to do that. I do that
when I make quilts myself.
