Start assembling your project by
joining the eight diamonds cut for
the centre star together. To do this,
match two adjacent diamonds right
sides together. Thread a milliner’s
needle with fine thread in a neutral
colour and knot it at one end. Slide the
needle under the seam allowance on
the wrong side of one shape, and exit
at a corner. Sew two stitches here,
one on top of the other, then whip
stitch the edge of the two shapes
together, just stitching through the
fold of the fabrics without penetrating
the papers. Secure the stitching at the
other end of the seam.2
Repeat to stitch the diamonds
into four pairs. Then join the pairs
to create half-stars and finally join the
two halves to complete the star.3
The next step is to join the squares
to the star. Do this by stitching one
edge of each square to an outer edge
of the star, then fold the work and stitch
an adjacent edge of each square to
the edge of an adjacent diamond. See
Diagram 4.4
In similar fashion, join the next
round of eight diamonds to the
outer edge of the block, as shown in
Diagram 5.5
Now organise your groups of three
diamonds and join them together.
Join each group of three diamonds to
a solid rectangle, referring to Diagram- Join these units to the outer edge of
the block, adding the squares cut from
solid fabric as you go.

Join each petal to a petal reversed,
then join them to the outer edge of
the block, as shown in Diagram 7.7

Test the acid-free glue you propose
to use to mount your work on some
scrap fabric. Once you’re satisfied that
it will dry clear and not seep into the
fabric, leaving marks, spread some
across the back of your block.2
Centre the fabric on the
mounting board, right side
facing up, and press it in place with
your fingers. Check that it is perfectly
straight and centred.3
Once the glue has completely
dried, insert the mounting board
into the frame — with a mat board if
you wish — add the backing board, and
