Quilters Companion - AU (2019-11)

(Antfer) #1
F. When positioning them on the
background, the outer tips of the
petals and leaves should be 5⅜in from
the centre of the block. Make a total of
12 large flower blocks.

3

Lay out the large blocks around
the outer edge of the quilt top,
orienting them to maintain the pattern
of alternating cream print fabrics in
the backgrounds.

4

Join the two blocks on the left
and right edges of the layout
together in pairs. Sew them to the left
and right edges of the quilt top.

5

Join the four blocks in the top and
bottom rows together. Sew them
to the top and bottom edges of the
quilt top. Press. Your quilt top should
now measure 48½in square from raw
edge to raw edge.

Border 1

1

Rule a diagonal line on the wrong
side of all of the 2¼in squares of
beige print fabric.

2

Lay one of these squares, right
sides together, on a 3½in square
cut from one of the mid-dark blue
tone-on-tone print fabrics, as shown
in Diagram 3. Stitch on the line, trim
the corner ¼in away from the stitching,
flip the beige triangle over and press.

3

Repeat this process to stitch
another 2¼ in beige square in the
diagonally opposite corner of the mid-
dark blue square.

4

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to make
32 units like this using from of the
two mid-dark blue tone-on-tone print
fabrics – 64 units in all.

5

Lay out 16 border units in a row

  • eight made from each of the
    two different mid-dark blue fabrics,
    alternating units made from different
fabrics and orienting them as shown
in Diagram 4. Sew the units together,
    carefully matching seams. Your row
    should measure 3½in x 48½in from
raw edge to raw edge. Repeat to make
a total for four rows, all exactly the
    same.

6

Sew a 2in x 4½in rectangle of
beige print fabric to each end of
the eight 2in x 40½in strips cut from
the same fabric. Each of these strips
should now measure 2in x 48½in from

raw edge to raw edge. Sew a strip to
the top and bottom long edges of the
border unit rows from Step 5. Press
seams outwards.

7

Sew a border panel to the left
and right edges of the quilt top,
referring to the photo of Cheryl’s
quilt for the correct orientation.
Press seams outwards. Sew a small
flower block that you put aside earlier
to each end of the remaining two
border panels, then sew them to the
top and bottom edges of the quilt,
again checking that they are oriented
correctly. Press seams outwards.

Borders 2–4

1

Join the six 1½in strips of light blue
tone-on-tone print fabric together,
end to end, to make one long strip.

2

Measure your quilt top vertically
through the centre. Trim two
strips this length from the long strip.
Sew them to the left and right edges of
the quilt top. Press seams outwards.

3

Measure your quilt top
horizontally through the centre.
Trim two strips this length from the
remainder of the long strip. Sew them
to the top and bottom edges of the
quilt top. Press seams outwards.

4

Join the seven 1½in strips of mid
blue print fabric together, end to
end, to make one long strip. Repeat
Steps 2 and 3 to join them to the quilt
top as Border 3

5

Join the seven 5½in strips of blue
on white print fabric together,
end to end, to make one long strip.
Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to join them to
the quilt top as Border 4.
