Preparation and cutting

1

If you are not using purchased
acrylic templates, trace the shapes
printed on the Pattern Sheet onto
template plastic using a permanent-
marking pen. Label them, then cut
them out accurately on the lines.
From each of the two tone-on-tone red
print fabrics, cut:

  • one strip, 4½in x width of fabric.

2

Match the two strips of fabric,
right sides together. Lay
Template B on the strips with its short
edges matching the long raw edges
of the fabrics, as shown in Diagram 1.
Cut 14 B shapes through both layers of
fabric — which will result in 14 B shapes
from one fabric and 14 B-reversed
shapes from the other. If you’re using
an acrylic template, you will be able to
rotary cut these shapes. If you’re using
a template-plastic template, trace
around the template with a pencil and
then cut the shape out on the pencil
lines with a rotary cutter and ruler.
From each of the two tone-on-tone
aqua print fabrics, cut:

  • one strip, 4½in x width of fabric.

3

Repeat Step 2 with these fabrics
to cut 14B shapes from one
fabric and 14 B-reversed shapes from
the other.
From the white print fabric, cut:

  • three strips, 5in x width of fabric.

4

Fold each of these strips in half,
short edges matching and wrong
sides together. Lay Template A on the
fabric with the shortest edge matching
the bottom edge of the fabric. Cut a
shape through both layers of fabric.
See Diagram 2. This will yield one A
shape and one A-reversed shape.

5

Rotate the template 180
degrees, align the shortest
edge with the top edge of the fabric,
and cut another shape through both
layers of fabric. Continue in this
manner to cut a total of 28 pairs of
triangles from the three strips — that
is, you will have 28 A shapes and 28
A-reversed shapes.
From the cream print fabric, cut:

  • two strips, 5in x width of fabric

  • four strips, 2½in x width of fabric
    (Border 1)

6

Repeat Steps 4 and 5 to cut 14
pairs of triangles from the 5in
strips of cream print fabric — that is,
14A shapes and 14 A-reversed shapes.
From the grey print fabric, cut:

  • seven Template C
From the fine grey stripe print fabric, cut:

  • five strips, 2½in x width of fabric
    (binding)

7

If you’re using the purchased
acrylic templates, lay them on
the wrong side of each appropriate
fabric shape and use a fine-point
pencil or fabric-marking pen to mark
dots through the holes. If you’ve made
your own templates, draw light lines
on the wrong side of each patch ¼in
from the raw edges at each corner
with a pencil, as shown in Diagram 3.

Diamond blocks

1

To make a Diamond block, you will
need:

  • one grey print C shape

  • two B shapes cut from the same red
    print fabric

  • two B-reversed shapes cut from the
    other red print fabric

  • two A shapes and two A-reversed
shapes cut from cream print fabric.

2

Lay out all the patches,
referring to the Diamond Block
Layout Diagram.

3

To piece the block, start by
matching each B or B-reversed
shape with its adjacent A triangle,
right sides together. Insert a pin
through the intersections of the
seam allowance lines/points that you
marked on the wrong side of each
patch, then pin the edges together
