Quilters Companion - AU (2019-11)

(Antfer) #1
in the usual way. Sew the shapes
together from raw edge to raw edge.
Press the seam allowances for the
units in the top right and bottom
left corners of the block towards the
cream A triangles; press the seam
allowance for the units in the top left
and bottom right corners towards the
red B shapes.

4

Now join the top right and
bottom left corner units to
the grey C diamond. Again, insert a
pin through the intersections of the
seam allowance lines/points that you
marked on the wrong side of each
patch, then pin the edges together
in the usual way. This time, sew the
seam from the top or bottom raw
edge of the block to the marked seam
intersection line/point at what will be
the centre corner of the block — that is,
do not sew into the seam allowance at
the centre corner. Press these seams
in the same direction as the seams on
the corner units.

5

Repeat the process described
in Step 4 to sew the top left
and bottom right corners to the
grey C diamond.

6

To complete the block, fold it so
the short edges of the red B and
B-reversed shapes match, right sides
together. Sew these short seams:
start from the outer edge of the block
and stitch to the intersection of the
seam allowance lines/points. Your
stitching should not cross onto the
grey fabric at all.

7

Repeat Steps 1–6 to make a
total of seven Diamond blocks all
exactly the same.

Chevron blocks

1

To make a Chevron block,
you will need:

  • one aqua print B shape

    • one white print A shape

    • one cream print A shape.

2

Lay out the patches, referring to
the Chevron Block Layout Diagram.

3

To piece the block, start by
matching the B shape with one
of the A triangles, right sides together.
Insert a pin through the intersections
of the seam allowance lines/points
that you marked on the wrong side
of each patch, then pin the edges
together in the usual way. Sew the
shapes together from raw edge to
raw edge.

4

Repeat Step 3 to sew the second
A triangle to the other long edge
of the B shape in the same way. Press
the seam allowances towards the
cream print triangles.

5

Repeat Steps 1–4 to make 14
Chevon blocks. Then repeat the
steps to make 14 Chevron-reversed
blocks, using the aqua B-reversed
shapes, and the white print and cream
print A-reversed triangles.

Assembly

1

Lay out the eight Diamond blocks
in a row. Then lay out the Chevron
and Chevron-reversed blocks in two
rows of 14 blocks each — one row
above the Diamond row and one
below it. The cream print fabric in each
Chevron block should be on the outer
edge of the row.

2

Join the blocks in each row
together. Press the seams in the
Diamond row in the opposite direction
from the seams in the other two rows.
Then join the three rows together,
carefully matching seams.

Border

1

Join the four 2½in strips of cream
print fabric together end to end to
make one long strip.

2

Measure your table runner
horizontally through the centre.
Cut two strips this length from the long
strip. Sew them to the top and bottom
edges of the runner. Press seams
outwards.

3

Measure your runner vertically
through the centre. Cut two
strips this length from the remainder
of the long strip. Sew them to the left
and right edges of the runner. Press
seams outwards.

Finishing

1

Remove the selvedges from the
backing fabric and cut it into
two equal lengths. Sew the pieces
together, short edges matching, with
a ½in seam and press the seam open.

2

The runner, backing and batting
are ready for a long-arm
quilting machine as they are. If you’re
quilting by hand or on a domestic
machine, follow the instructions for
Preparing the Quilt Sandwich in the
free downloadable Basics Guide* to
pin or baste the quilt top, batting and
backing together.

3

Quilt as desired. This runner was
initially machine quilted in the
ditch of all the seam lines. Straight
lines were then echo quilted in the
white print zigzag. The cream print
triangles and border were quilted
with a free-motion swirling design.

4

Trim the excess backing fabric
and batting ¼in outside the edge
of the runner.

5

Follow the instructions in Binding
the Quilt in The Basics Guide* to
bind the quilt using the five 2½in strips
of grey stripe print fabric.
