Quilters Companion - AU (2019-11)

(Antfer) #1
From the white print fabric, cut:

  • 12 B shapes. Transfer the dots and
marks from the template onto the
    fabric using an erasable fabric-
    marking pen
From each of the purple spot and
    yellow print fabrics, cut:

  • two strips, 3½in x width of fabric.
You will need additional strips — cut
them as needed once you start
    foundation piecing
From the large-scale black print fabric, cut:

  • one square, 42½in
From the black and yellow print fabric, cut:

  • four strips, 5in down the length of
    the fabric
From both the black spot and the
    cream print fabrics, cut:

  • four strips, 6½in x width of fabric.
You will need additional strips — cut
them as needed once you start
    foundation piecing
From the grey print fabric, cut:

  • four squares, 5½in
    From the multi-coloured stripe print
    fabric #2, cut:

  • seven strips, 3in x width of fabric
    (binding)

Centre star

1

Join a B shape to each A shape, as
shown in Diagram 1. Sew from the
outer edge towards the centre; stop
stitching exactly at the dot. Backstitch
to secure the seam. Press the seam
towards the A shape. Then join a C
shape to each A shape, again, stitching
from the outer edge to the centre dot.
Press the seam towards the A shape.
Make 12 of these units in total.

2

To join the units together, match
two of them, right sides together,
aligning the upper left edge of the A
diamond on the upper layer with the
right straight edge of the B shape in
the lower layer, as shown in Diagram

  1. Pin the layers together through the
dots at the junction of the A, B and C

shapes. Sew from the outer edge of
the A shape to this pin. Stop with the
needle down at the pin, remove the pin
and lift the presser foot.

3

Swivel the upper unit so that the
lower left edge of the A diamond
on the upper layer matches the raw
straight edge of the C shape in the
lower layer. Lower the presser foot,
and sew this seam from the centre dot
to the outer edge.

4

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to join all
the units in pairs, then join the
pairs to create quarter stars and so on
until all the units are joined in a circle
with a hole in its centre. Press gently.

5

Measure the diameter of
the hole and add ½in to this
measurement. Use a compass to draw
a circle this size on light cardboard.
Cut it out on the line. Lay the circle on
the wrong side of the 7in square of
black print fabric and cut the fabric
about ⅜in outside the edge of the
cardboard.

6

Hand sew a line of running stitch
around the fabric circle a scant
¼in from the edge, leaving long thread
tails at the beginning and end. Place
the cardboard template in the centre
of the fabric circle on the wrong side
and pull up the thread to gather the
seam allowance over to the back
evenly and firmly, as shown in Diagram

  1. Spray the shape lightly with starch
and press it well on both sides.

7

Lay the circle right side up in the
centre of the star. Appliqué it to
the light orange inner star points using
thread to match the black print fabric.
Carefully remove the basting stitches
and ease the template out from the
behind the fabric. Press.

Ring of points

1

Use the 3½in strips of purple
spot and yellow print fabrics
to cover eight G foundations using

foundation-piecing techniques.
Follow the numerical order to cover
each area on the traced foundations:
use the purple spot fabric for areas
with odd numbers and the yellow
fabric for areas with even numbers.
Trim each seam to ¼in before adding
the fabric for the next area. Chris
indicates that you will be sewing
along the length of each strip of
fabric, not across its (3½in) width.
Cut more strips of fabric as needed.

2

Trim the overhanging fabric and
paper on the outer lines of the
foundations. Then join the foundations
together to form a large ring. Gently
remove the paper behind each
foundation.

3

Match the centre circle and the
ring of points, right sides together
and with the ring of points on top.
Position the ring so that each star
point in the centre circle aligns with a
point at the top of a yellow triangle in
the outer ring. Sew the centre circle
and ring together. Press the seam
allowance towards the centre circle.

Ricrac and quilt centre

1

If you wish to mimic Chris’
handiwork, stitch stars using
straight stitches in the centre of each
‘hill’ on the ricrac. Chris embroidered in
black thread. See image on next page.

2

Pin the ricrac around the outer
edge of the ring of points so
that when it is sewn in place, the ¼in
seam will lie just below each ‘dip’ in
the ricrac, as shown in Diagram 4.
(If you’ve embroidered the ricrac,
the embroidered side should be face
down, matching the right side of the
ring of points fabrics.) Overlap the
beginning and end of the ricrac and
trim the surplus. Stitch the ricrac in
place using a ¼in seam.

3

Press the ricrac so the part of
it that was above the ¼in seam
