Quilters Companion - AU (2019-11)

(Antfer) #1

Materials

  • 30cm (⅜yd) each of eight white/grey
    print fabrics

  • 25cm (¼yd) each of 11 yellow, orange
    and brown print fabrics

  • 50cm (½yd) print fabric (binding)

  • 3.1m (3¼yd) backing fabric

  • Batting at least 150cm x 190cm
    (58in x 76in)

  • Rotary cutter, ruler and mat

  • Sewing machine with ¼in foot

  • General sewing supplies

Cutting
From each of the eight white/grey print
fabrics, cut:

  • three strips, 3½in x width of
fabric. Cross cut them to yield 15
    rectangles, 3½in x 7½in of each
fabric. You will need 100 rectangles
in this project, so you will have some
    left over
From each of the 11 yellow, orange and
    brown print fabrics, cut:

  • two strips, 3½in x width of
fabric. Cross cut them to yield 10
    rectangles, 3½in x 7½in of each
fabric. You will use 100 rectangles in
this project, so you will have some
    left over
    From the print fabric, cut:

  • six strips, 2½in x width of fabric
    (binding)

Half-rectangle triangle
units

1

Match eight white/grey print
(background) rectangles with eight
yellow, orange or brown print (coloured)
rectangles, right sides together. Try to
create pairs in different combinations
— this isn’t critical and you will end up
with some matching combinations as
you progress with the project, but aim
for variety.

2

Refer to the Block Masterclass
on page 76 for background
information on the method used
to make HRTs. You will be using the
pairs of rectangles from Step 1 to
make four forward HRTs and four
backward HRTs.

3

Begin by placing one pair of
rectangles side by side on your
work surface: the coloured rectangle
should be right side facing up and the
background one should be right side
facing down. Make a light mark on
the coloured rectangle ¼in from the
top right corner and the bottom left
corner. On the background rectangle,
make a light mark ¼in from the top left

corner and the bottom right corner.
Draw a line from mark to mark on the
background rectangle, as shown in
Diagram 1.

4

Match the two rectangles
right sides together, with the
background rectangle on top. Align the
marks, as shown in Diagram 2, and pin
the layers together.

5

Sew a scant 1/4in on either side of
the drawn line. Cut the fabrics on
the drawn line to yield two HRT units.

6

Repeat Steps 3–5 with another
pair of rectangles to yield a total
of four forward HRTs.

7

You now need to make four
backward HRTs — the process
is similar, but the markings are
positioned differently.

8

Begin by placing one pair of
rectangles side by side on your
work surface: the coloured rectangle
should be right side facing up and
the background one should be right
side facing down. Make a light mark
on the coloured rectangle ¼in from
the top left corner and the bottom
right corner. On the background
rectangle, make a light mark ¼in from
the top right corner and the bottom
left corner. Draw a line from mark to
mark on the background rectangle.

9

Match the two rectangles
right sides together, with the
background rectangle on top. Align
the marks and pin the layers together.
Sew a scant ¼in on either side of the
drawn line. Cut the fabrics on the
drawn line to yield two HRT units.

10

Repeat Steps 8 and 9 with
another pair of rectangles to yield
a total of four backward HRT units.

11

Continue in this manner to make
equal numbers of forward and
backward HRT units until you have
50 of each.

Assembly

1

Rather than laying out the units
in long rows before joining them,
Deborah recommends making smaller
units, then joining them to make larger
units. To adopt this approach, begin
by joining HRTs of the same type
together along one long edge: that is,
join a forward HRT to another forward
HRT; join a backward HRT to another
backward HRT, as shown in Diagram 3.

2

To make a unit of four HRTs, join
a pair of forward HRTs to a pair
of backward HRTs along one short
edge. Pin them together carefully
where the seam lines meet and sew
